Equality Tool for the Audiovisual Industry

The Equality Tool helps actors in the av industry to prepare production-specific equality and equality plans and to evaluate productions from an equality perspective.

Developed for the film and television industry, the Equality Tool assists audiovisual productions in the promotion of equality and non-discrimination. It allows productions to prepare their own equality and non-discrimination plans that will concretely assist the promotion of both gender equality and non-discrimination in a wider sense.

The tool stimulates reflection on the content of shows, employment relationships and occupational safety from the perspective of equality and non-discrimination. It also produces statistical data on equality and non-discrimination in the Finnish audiovisual industry. In addition, the plan may support companies’ communication efforts and the preparation of funding applications. For example, production support recipients are required to have an equality and equality plan.

Women in Film & Television Finland (WIFT Finland) developed the Equality Tool to respond to the special characteristics of the audiovisual industry. Due to the project-based industry, the industry typically consists of small organisations and freelancers whose activities are influenced by changing content, schedule pressures and sometimes limited resources. The production-specific tool supports the equal and non-discriminatory implementation of project-based work in particular.

The development project was led by lawyer Eeva-Sofia Anttonen. The project has received funding from the Finnish Film Foundation and the Ministry of Education and Culture. The tool’s interactive form template is provided by WIFT Finland’s cooperation partner M-Files.
