Ekosetti

How can film and television productions be made more ecologically sustainable? The Ekosetti guide presents a wide range of practices for promoting the ecological sustainability of audiovisual productions.

Ekosetti – A Guidebook to Sustainable Audiovisual Production in Finland presents practices for making film and television productions more ecologically sustainable. The guide is aimed at everyone in the audiovisual industry, covering various departments and stages from production to distribution.

Ekosetti is the first Finnish guide for ecologically sustainable activities in the audiovisual industry. The purpose of the guide has been to encourage discussion around a new kind of operating culture in which ecology is made part of decision-making and practical work. Ekosetti can thus be seen as an important turning point in working towards the environmental sustainability of the Finnish audiovisual industry.

Ekosetti has been written by Kaisa “Kaika” Astikainen and Anne Puolanne. Project partners and sponsors include AVEK, APFI ry, and Aalto University. Ekosetti has been published in Finnish in autumn 2019 and in English in spring 2020. At the end of 2024, the guide had been downloaded in Finnish and English more than 13,000 times.

More sustainable audiovisual production in a nutshell

  • When striving for more sustainable production practices, critically examine all the phases included in your job description from beginning to end. There are always surprises along the way, but try to keep sustainability in mind even in busy situations.
  • Use renewable energy.
  • Get around by walking, cycling, public transport, or carpools. Examine critically the need for travel, especially flying.
  • Aim for circular economy and recycle. Invest in quality instead of buying cheap.
  • Favour locally produced vegetarian food that is in season, reduce meat in your diet.
  • Pay attention to environmental issues even in the content of your production and try to present a more sustainable world.
  • Consider carbon offsetting but do not rely on it as the only solution.
  • Respect everyone’s sustainability actions. Avoid preaching. Be an example.
